Exclusive interview with Michael Lucas

GayPornZoom: Hello Michael, thanks for taking the time to do an interview for our blog. I’ve always been a big fan of your work. You come up with amazing film ideas, great cast and the result is always a best seller. Tell me, what’s the secret of making good porn and what is the best part of making movies for you?

Michael Lucas: Thanks a lot Andy, great talking with you as always. The most important part is to cast guys that have a sexual connection with each other. We find this out in the interview process. We ask the model what they like and what they don’t, what is their fantasty, ect. We like to capture real sex that is truly passionate because they are into each other.

GPZ: When I saw you in the ‘Thinking XXX’ (TV documentary), and heard you talking about porn, this was the point when I started to follow your career. From the documentary I’ve learnt that you took the Pet Shop Boys song’s (Go West) refrain seriously and you moved to the United States. I think you‘ve managed to live the American dream. How hard was it to start from nothing to have the world’s leading gay porn studio?

Michael Lucas: It was very difficult because I came here with no money and I didn’t know anyone. No one wanted to take me seriously and I didn’t speak the language or know the industry all that well. So it was a challenge starting the company from the ground up. But I had my goal and I refused to be defeated.

GPZ: If I look at your movies, starting from the movie itself, the photos, the cover..I can tell that you are perfectionist. I’m a regular reader of the Lucas blog, and I see that you are shooting movies all around the world and then the dvds come out very quickly. How do you manage to make extraordinary movies in such a short time?

Michael Lucas: A have a great team assembled for Lucas Entertainment . I’m very selective in choosing who works for me and I choose people who are great professionals in their fields. We have acclaimed photographers, writers, designers, etc. and all of our efforts come together for a polished and hot end product.

GPZ: Everywhere you go, Mr Pam is with you. I guess she is the woman of Lucas Entertainment, right? I really enjoy watching her in the behind the scenes videos, and the way she captures the hottest moments is amazing. How did you find her, and what is working with Pam like?

Michael Lucas: Pam lived in San Francisco and we worked together on a couple projects freelance. I loved her enegery, professionalism and her passion for the industry so I moved her from California to NYC.

GPZ: I’ve read that your studio has just launched an anti-piracy campaign and sued 65 torrent users, who downloaded your movie ‘Missing’. Are you going to take further steps to force torrent sites to remove your titles? Is there any progress in this case?

Michael Lucas:I love the fans of Lucas Entertainment but the people who are stealing the videos should understand at some point that if our movies continue to be stolen then we won’t be able to produce new films. So I decided not to take these issues lightly and treat the illegal downloaders as thieves and they will be penalized and we will continue to individually go after them. Everyone will suffer if it continues simply because it takes a lot of money to complete a production with models, crew, editors, PR, etc. So we intend to keep the quality of our productions high and to supply our paying customers with what they want.

GPZ: You are well-known for your activism and outspokenness about unprotected sex and use of drugs. You also give speeches at universities and you are a regular columnist for The Advocate. Why is it your passion to talk about these things?

Michael Lucas: I obviously don’t want to work with anyone who is high on drugs. It would never look good and it also goes against my own convictions about abusing your mind and body. I think that porn is a great platform to promote safe sex and to keep our community healthy. So I take this chance to do what I can. My Advocate column makes me very proud. It is a very serious gay political magazine. My column might come across as shocking to some readers because I don’t wrap my articles around the restraints of taboo and being politically correct. So people read it as too blunt but the naked truth isn’t often pretty.

GPZ: When you are interviewing a newcomer, what are the most important things: face, body, size of cock, personality or sexual orientation? What do you think of gay for pay models?

Michael Lucas: I do look for all those physical attributes that fit into the Lucas Entertainment model profile. But personality is very important. Are they down to earth, difficult to work with, kind to the crew? All of these things are vital. I try to never work with straight models because I believe that both the straight guy and his partner who he is using are being tortured. And it is all about having a good time. If the guys don’t enjoy each other than the viewer won’t be able to enjoy it.

GPZ: Studios can sell less and less DVDs every year, do you think that the age of DVDs is over and the future is video streaming?

Michael Lucas: At some point yes. But I think it is still a far way away. I think it will happen later than most people think. Surprisingly our DVDs sales are still growing.

GPZ: Can you tell me more about your upcoming movie summer movie that comes out on September 24th? Which guys can we see in this movie?

Michael Lucas: We really have a fantastic all-star group of guys in this film. We set out to go to the places that are iconic in New York City in the summer time: Coney Island, Fire Island Pines, Chelsea Piers, FI lighthouse, etc. We filmed several actually out doors at these locations and all of the scenes features the guys in hot speedos cruising each other in the heat. The film stars Adam Killian, Parker London, Rod Daily, newcomer Patrick Logan, Junior Stellano, Spencer Reed, Rafael Alencar, Zach Alexander, Jeremy Bilding and John Magnum.

GPZ: I’ve read that you are coming to Europe again. This time, the location is Berlin. What kind of story will this movie have? What else can we know about it?

Michael Lucas: The story is in development now. Berlin is known for very open minded guys so we will definitely explore that. Berlin is also easy to get to from all over Europe so it will be a very international cast. We will shot 3 movies: a mainline, a kink with lots pissing and fisting since Jonthan Agassi is interested in doing that for the first time, and as well we will shoot an auditions film.

GPZ: You shoot lots of movies in Hungary – where I live- why do you come back to Hungary from time to time? Is it the models or the locations? Who is your favorite Hungarian model?

Michael Lucas: I love Martin Passoli and Lucio Maverick. Lucio bottomed first and last time on film in Cruising Budapest III. I did the scene with him and I might say I think this is my favorite scene of all time!

GPZ: You have many amazing models from all over the world, but which guys are your personal favorites? Who is the best to work with?

Michael Lucas: Jonathan Agassi from Israel is amazing. From France Wilfried Knight. From Spain there are so many including Carlos Caballlero. From America Junior Stellano and Steven Daigle. But there are so many that I truly love to work with.

GPZ: I’ve seen on your website, that you are going to have another tour to Israel, and you are already accepting reservations for the next trip in May 2011. Please tell my readers why should they join you for this trip? How was this year’s Tour of Israel?

Michael Lucas: It was fantstic. Everyone had an amazing time. I brought mr. Pam with me and she filmed a lot of the tour and we will have a short promo from this by the end of August on:

In Israel the men are hot, the food is great, the beaches are pristine and gorgeous, and historically there is so much to see.

GPZ: Finally, what’s your main goal in life?

Michael Lucas: The feeling of accomplishment and being surrounded by my family and friends.
